Club DJ and Bar DJ
Although DJ Brent has made his name primary in the mobile, party, wedding and corporate event circuit, he is no stranger to club and bar gigs and often gets requests to perform slots at various venues. He believes that the biggest trick when Djing venues such as bars is setting the mood for the patrons by playing the right music at the right volume (slightly louder than the usual background music but not massively so where people will still be able to hold a conversation). He is able to skilfully walk the line in terms of musical style and being noticeable, but not overly so. In nightclubs, on the other hand, more than anywhere else, people come for the music and he welcomes the expectation to get them dancing. He has opened for a few legendary South African DJs and is adept at soothing, teasing and nudging the dance floor from empty to being ready to take off – as well as playing peak-time sets.
Modern DJing has evolved into an international business, but nightclubs are still a vital proving ground for established DJs. A good club DJ is always prepared to play different styles on different occasions. Whether it’s opening the night to an empty dance floor or headlining a packed club, each occasion has its own demands. DJ Brent believes that every set you do is a statement about who you are as a DJ, so it’s important to be diligent in all his preparations. Brent believes that it’s important to get to know the customers as the night is really for them, and they spend the money that keeps the club in business.
Opening for another DJ can often be more challenging than headlining. Playing a proper warm-up set can be one of the most difficult tasks for a DJ. An effective opening set can be the determining factor in whether a club night is successful, yet many club owners and promoters seem to overlook the importance of an opening club DJ’s role. As the opening club DJ, Brent is aware of the need to be aware of the progression of the night and always show restraint. The key is to build up the energy gradually so that he can set up a smooth transition to the headliner’s set.
As the headlining DJ, Brent knows he’ll be responsible for playing the hottest songs during peak time at the club. As a headliner he also brings s strong established stage presence knowing that the crowd will be feeding off his energy.
